World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare, celebrated every year on October 4. The event was initiated by Heinrich Zimmermann who organized the first World Animal Day on March 24, 1925 at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5.000 people attended this first event. The event was originally scheduled for October 3, to coincide with the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology, however, the venue was not available that day. Nine countries along the Danube River have joined forces to protect some of Europe’s most endangered species: the sturgeons. On 9–10 July, thirteen project partners and strategic allies – including national ministries, universities, NGOs and research bodies – gathered in Bucharest to launch “MonStur in the Danube”, a new cross-border effort to monitor and protect these ancient migratory fish.
