New book: The ionic composition of the Dniester River within the territory of the Republic of Moldova

The monograph “The ionic composition of the Dniester River within the territory of the Republic of Moldova” by Nina Bagrin represents a synthesis of the results of long-term hydrochemical investigations conducted during 1981-2023 by the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology of the Institute of Zoology. The results obtained for the period 2020-2023 are based on investigations carried out directly by the author, while the previous data originate from the long-term studies of the laboratory.

The monograph includes an analysis of the long-term, annual, and seasonal dynamics of major ions (bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium), as well as water hardness and mineralization. Particular attention is given to the influence of tributaries on the hydrochemical regime of the Dniester River and to the assessment of ionic transport in the Răut, Bâc, Botna, and Dniester rivers.

The research results reveal the spatial and temporal features of the hydrochemical regime of the Dniester basin under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors, including climate change, urbanization, and agricultural land use. The obtained data contribute to the advancement of knowledge regarding the formation processes of the ionic composition of surface waters and may serve as a scientific basis for water quality monitoring, water resources management, and the development of protection measures for transboundary aquatic ecosystems.

The monograph was prepared within the framework of the following national and international projects: 09.832.08.07A, 11.817.08.13F, 11.817.08.15A, 15.817.02.27A, 20.80009.7007.06, MIS ETC 1150, MIS ETC 1676, BSB 165, BSB 27, and Subprogram 01070.

The monograph is intended for hydrochemists, ecologists, hydrobiologists, environmental specialists, researchers, PhD students, university students, and all readers interested in aquatic ecosystems and water quality studies.
