May 22 – World Biodiversity Day

The International Day for Biological Diversity or World Biodiversity Day, marked annually on May 22, is an occasion for global awareness and action to protect the planet's species and ecosystems. Established by the United Nations in 2000, this day reminds us that biodiversity is not only an expression of the richness of nature, but a vital element for the survival of each species. The main purpose of this celebration is to raise awareness of biodiversity issues and emphasize the importance of natural resources for maintaining life on Earth.

In 2026, the event continues to bring to the forefront the protection of species and biological diversity, a vital element for local and global ecological balance. The official theme established by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity for the 2026 International Day for Biodiversity is "Acting locally for global impact".

This theme focuses on the following main directions:

  • the power of small initiatives: major changes and stopping biodiversity loss depend directly on the involvement of local communities, schools and all organizations;
  • the propagation effect: ecological actions carried out close to home generate a positive impact that extends to the planetary level;
  • connecting with global goals: this year's campaign correlates community projects with the 23 global targets established by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework;
  • urgent implementation: the message reminds that there are only a few years left to achieve the sustainable development goals established for 2030.

Every year, on World Biodiversity Day, environmental institutions and nature reserves in the Republic of Moldova organize activities dedicated to protecting local ecosystems. Along with the entire global community, the Institute of Zoology within USM organizes practical and information activities, symposia and webinars dedicated to biodiversity protection and draws attention to the impact of human activities on the environment.
