World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare, celebrated every year on October 4.
The event was initiated by Heinrich Zimmermann who organized the first World Animal Day on March 24, 1925 at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5.000 people attended this first event. The event was originally scheduled for October 3, to coincide with the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology, however, the venue was not available that day. The event was moved to October 4, for the first time in 1929. Initially, it was held in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Each year, Zimmermann worked tirelessly to promote World Animal Day. Finally, in May 1931, at the International Congress for the Protection of Animals in Florence, Italy, his proposal to make October 4, World Animal Day, a global holiday, was unanimously accepted and adopted as a resolution. It is celebrated in different ways in each country, regardless of nationality, religion, belief or political ideology.
On this day, all animals on the planet, wild and domestic, are celebrated. This day aims to raise awareness of how human actions can influence the lives of animals and, implicitly, life on the planet. The most important mission of this holiday is that, through education and awareness, the world in which we live becomes a friendlier and more favorable place for animals, because animals play an essential role in human life to satisfy all needs, from food, clothing, to companionship, transportation and protection.
Animals also play a very important role in nature: they maintain ecological balance, enrich the soil, consume organic debris, transforming waste into nutrients for plants. They also play an important role in ecosystem services, with many animals involved in pollination, pest control, air purification and maintaining water quality.
