The need for environmental protection and biodiversity conservation – the subject of the information seminar held in Slobozia Mare

On 11 September 2019, in the village of Slobozia Mare, Cahul district, an information seminar was held, organized by the Institute of Zoology and the Alexandru Ciubotaru National Botanical Garden (Institute) - two research institutes of the Moldova State University - within the project “Assessment of the state of plant, fungi and animal species, development of the list of species with rarity status and the algorithm for their presentation in the 4th edition of the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova”.

The local library was the host of those more than 40 participants – pupils and teachers from the Slobozia Mare village, researchers from the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve and project staff.

The seminar was moderated by the director of the Institute of Zoology Laurenția UNGUREANU, correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Dr.hab., Prof.,  and included communications on:

  • critically endangered plant species, practically extinct on the territory of the Republic of Moldova (Aliona MIRON, PhD., Assoc.Prof.);
  • rare species of terrestrial vertebrates from the Lower Prut (Viorica PALADI, PhD);
  • rare coleopterans (Insecta: Coleoptera) from the fauna of the Republic of Moldova (Svetlana BACAL, Dr.Hab., Assoc.Prof.);
  • bats – the most vulnerable group of mammals (Vladislav CALDARI, PhD)
  • rare dendritic species included in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova (Elena TOFAN-DOROFEEV, PhD).

The floristic and faunal richness of the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve was also mentioned, the future of which depends, first and foremost, on human will and effort.

As part of the project funded by the National Environmental Fund, three more information seminars are planned.
