During October 27-31, 2025, the Institute of Zoology, Moldova State University, organized the working meeting within the Baltic & Black Sea Avian Disease Network project (2024-2026), having as main partner Linnaeus University of Sweden, and other partners from the Baltic and Black Sea basins: Birdlife Sverige, Ilia State University (Georgia), Moldova State University, National Scientific Center Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine (Ukraine).
A number of important activities were carried out, in order to strengthen relations between the participating countries and organizations, as well as to create a network for the surveillance of bird migrations and diseases.
The meeting was attended by leading researchers from Sweden, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, including the project director Dr. Professor Jonas Waldenström - Linnaeus University of Sweden, Dr. Magnus Hellström - Director of the Ornithological Observatory in Ottenby, Sweden, Dr. Denys Muzyka - National Scientific Center Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine of Ukraine, and Dr. Raisa Cernichko - Institute of Zoology "I.I. Shamhausen" of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
On October 28, an information workshop was organized at the Institute of Zoology. The agenda included the following presentations:
1. Birds and bird-borne disease in a flyway perspective – Prof. Jonas Waldenström, PhD;
2. Research despite the war: surveillance of emerging viral, bacterial pathogens in wild birds and animals in Ukraine – Denys Muzyka, PhD;
3. Ottenby Bird Observatory – Magnus Hellström, PhD;
4. Regional Ornithological Monitoring (ROM) - Experience of the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station, Ukraine – Raisa Cernichko, PhD;
5. Work of the 22nd Ornithological School-Seminar 2025. Ornithological fauna and methods of its research – Raisa Cernichko, PhD.
During October 29-30, field research was carried out in important bird areas and the “Lower Prut” Biosphere Reserve from the southern part of the republic. Important aquatic bodies for bird migrations and wintering were visited - Congaz and Taraclia reservoirs, the Beleu and Manta lakes. Over 80 species were recorded with a total number of about 12,000 individuals.
